Promise

Promise

Was it sealed with kiss?

Was it sealed with a word?

Was it written in stone or paper?

Was it delivered by mail?

Was it told over the telephone?

Was it heard before the land?

Was it sung before the choir of Angels?

Was it watched and whispered on the streets?

A Promise is Promise …

The rules broken,

The laws changed,

The contracts filed,

The files destroyed,

The recordings hidden,

The books burnt or left to rot,

The illusion of eating worms,

To fill the belly,

To satisfy a desire,

As the dishonest ways,

Engulfed their lives,

Walking with mad cows disease,

Or the Black Plague,

With boils and lumps and soars,

Rotting away until there were only,

Rotten apples to eat or throw,

As the rose bed gardens,

Bowed in shame,

Riddled in guilt,

Burn by the sun,

Left to wither and die,

As the wind carried away the petals,

Of promise, promise promise …
